Can
you trace your faith to a specific founder? Do you have
a singular "holy book" inspired by God as the
scriptural guide for your faith? In Korea, many of our people
are very religious and yet without the Truth.
The
Shilla Dynasty that unified Korea in 668 made Buddhism the
official religion. A unique feature of some Korean Buddhist
temples is a side chapel dedicated to a mountain spirit
- usually shown as an old man with a pet tiger. Today about
forty-five percent of Koreans follow Buddhism.
Confucius also had a great influence our Korean ideas. Confucianism
became the official state system in the 14th century with
the Chosun Dynasty. We may not consider Confucianism so
much a religion as a political and social system based on
conduct as expressed by sons to fathers, wives to husbands,
people toward rulers. Although old rulers have passed away
and Korea has become a modern state, Confucian ideas remain
present in our family organization, devotion to ancestors,
and in everyday behavior.
Messengers
proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ arrived in the 17th
century. Christianity was prohibited by many years by Korea's
rulers, but over the last 50 years Christianity has provided
hope for an increasing number of Koreans. Now, more than
half of all Koreans are Christians. Korea today has one
of the largest number of missionaries sharing the message
of Jesus Christ around the world.
Who was
Jesus? What is His message?
God
has spoken to us by Jesus Christ, whom God appointed heir
of all things and through whom God made the universe. He
is the radiance of God’s glory, the exact expression
of God’s nature, and He sustains all things with His
powerful Word. After making purification for sins, Jesus
sat down at the right hand of God. Hebrews 2-3
